Sera blogs about language learning and cognitive development

Maria Sera, professor at the Institute of Child Development, discusses what her research is showing about how language affects cognitive development in the CEHD Vision 2020 blog: Exploring Language Learning and Cognitive Development. Sera, who has recently finished two large studies on language categories and classifiers, has found that research on categorization is relevant to science classroom practices. She says: “It’s important for teachers not to assume that all students have the same underlying concepts about the world, but instead, to realize that students may conceptualize things differently.” In future work, Sera intends to continue to clarify the relations between developing language and cognition.
