Dan Hoffman, MS, a PhD candidate in Kinesiology and member of the Skeletal Muscle Plasticity and Regeneration Laboratory (SMPRL), led by Sarah Greising, PhD, associate professor in the School of Kinesiology, published an article in Journal of Orthopaedic Research titled “Tibial bone strength is negatively affected by volumetric muscle loss injury to the adjacent muscle in male mice.”

This work is part of a collaborative project between Drs. Greising and Jarrod Call (University of Georgia). Co-authors of the article include fellow PhD students Albino Schifino and Jun-Won Heo (University of Georgia), and Roger Zhong (August University), as well as Drs. Marion Cooley (August University) and Gordon Warren (Georgia State University). The objective of this study was to investigate how contractile strength loss associated with traumatic muscle injury affects the adjacent tibial bone structural and functional properties. The major findings suggest that the newly understood bone-muscle functional mismatch in injured limbs suggests further development of bone fragility after injuries such as volumetric muscle loss.
