Awardees are nominated by students and are judged by a panel of graduate students involved with COGS  on their contributions to student learning & development outcomes.

He was nominated by FSOS graduate student Gretchen Buchanan, who credits Piehler’s flexibility, his focus on student growth, and support for work/life balance after the birth of her child,  in creating an environment in which she could thrive.

“Dr. Piehler was 100 percent supportive of me bringing my baby to advising meetings, lab meetings, and other project meetings,” she says. “This whole-hearted acceptance has helped me keep my graduate education on schedule, with multiple publications in the works, and researching what I truly care about.”

Piehler’s program of research seeks to improve the prevention of conduct problems and substance use in youth through developing better targeted and tailored programming.
