Tom Stoffregen, PhD, professor of perceptual-motor control and learning in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Affordance Perception-Action Laboratory (APAL), was recently quoted in a Longreads article about motion sickness on amusement park rides by Emily Latimer, entitled, “I Think I’m Going to Be Sick.” Latimer reached out to Dr. Stoffregen for his expertise in motion sickness, where he weighed in, explaining that motion sickness results from postural instability, not mixed signals from the inner ear. He says, “You’re trying to stabilize the head against these motions that you cannot predict and cannot control.”
