Dean Jean Quam and CEHD staff presented an overview of the college approach to innovations in technology for teaching and learning to the Board of Regents’ Educational Planning & Policy Committee on June 7. Part of a larger presentation led by Provost Karen Hanson on e-learning and e-textbooks, the CEHD report included insights on college initiatives in mobile learning and iPads and open textbooks, among others.
Regents were encouraged to use iPads as part of the presentation to get a hands-on feel for some of the technology. They were “excited” by the demonstrations and discussed “the University’s use of e-learning” and “how the University can become more tech-savvy in the future and how much that might cost,” according to a Minnesota Daily story on the presentation.
“We thought–what better way to show you than to put some iPads in your hands?” said the dean at the presentation. “That’s what we’ve been doing with our first-year students for two years now.”
Assigned to each regent was a CEHD information-technology staff member in maroon and gold, helping to navigate the iPads as Dean Quam showed several examples–book chapter contents, images, video… how to highlight text, create note cards and flash cards, and take a quiz.
Catherine Solheim, associate professor in the Department of Family Social Science, and Chuck McGill, teaching specialist in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, discussed the use of technology in the classroom in a separate Minnesota Daily story published June 13.
