Ka I Ip, PhD, will be joining ICD as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in January 2023. Dr. Ip completed his PhD at the University of Michigan in 2020 where he received the Marquis Award for best doctoral dissertation in psychology. Most recently, Ip was the Susan Nolen-Hoeksema Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University.
Ip is proud to be a first-generation immigrant and to have begun his academic career at a community college. Fifteen years ago, he came to the United States with the dream of becoming a professor. Ip notes he is thrilled to be joining the ICD community in this capacity.
Coming into ICD, Ip stated “I am most excited about and amazed by the supportive, collaborative and intellectual environment at ICD. I look forward to joining ICD in January 2023 and continuing my research to improve children and adolescents’ mental health and to promote DEI work through my research, mentorship, teaching, and service.”
His research interests include culture, children and adolescents’ mental health and the developing brain. In particular, his research focuses on typical and atypical emotion regulation development, cultural contexts that shape regulation and how early life stress and social and structural determinants of health may “get under the skin” to confer risk and resilience for developmental psychopathology and health disparities, especially among children from immigrant and racial-ethnic minoritized backgrounds.
“We are looking forward to the arrival of Dr. Ip who brings exciting new directions in developmental psychopathology research to ICD”, says Kathleen Thomas, Director of ICD.
His teaching philosophy focuses on inspiring his students to be critical thinkers who can analyze information from different perspectives and are sensitive to diversity issues. Ip will lead the D.A.N.C.E. (Development, Affective Neuroscience, Culture & Environment) Lab. Stay tuned to learn more about opportunities to be involved with this lab.
We are thrilled to welcome Ka I Ip to the ICD community!
