The individualized studies track in the Institute of Child Development’s online MA in applied child and adolescent development program is designed for students with varying interest areas that involve working with children, youth, and families. Alongside foundational child development courses, students are given the opportunity to select electives that best fit their individualized goals and interests.

Anne Larson, PhD, leads the individualized studies track and advises students throughout their time in the program. She also is a research associate at ICD’s Center for Early Education and Development. Below, Dr. Larson answers questions about the MA program and her own individualized path.

What inspired you to enter the field of developmental psychology?

I was initially interested in a help-giving career to support young children. At the time, I was not aware of how much I would be working with adults, and I now fully embrace the work I do with caregivers to support their children!

How did your academic and professional experiences lead you to your role in ICD?

Although the research and practices associated with the field of developmental psychology have always served as the foundation for my work, my path to formal involvement in a department of developmental psychology at the Institute for Child Development was not straightforward. I was initially trained as a bilingual speech-language pathologist where I worked with families and other caregivers to support young children’s communication, social/emotional, and cognitive development. Practical experience led me to pursue a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology where I solidified my interests in research and professional preparation and development, and I went on to an Assistant Professor position in another institution. After several years in the Mountain West, I made my way back to the University of Minnesota where I am grateful to have a position that allows me to continue an exciting line of research while also supporting students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

How is ICD’s individualized studies MA program unique?

The Individualized Studies MA gives students the ability to enter the field of Child Development regardless of their previous background and experience. Students enter the program with unique perspectives from related and sometimes seemingly distal career paths. They leave with expansive knowledge on the intersection between child development and their other areas of interest.

Who is this program right for?

The Individualized Studies MA is most appropriate for students who have spent some time exploring their career interests through practical work experience. The most successful students come into the program with ideas about where they are heading next, the MA sets them on a path to meet their goals.
