DeJaeghere working on “social mobilizer” project funded by Department of Labor grant

DeJaeghereJoan-2013Joan DeJaeghere, associate professor in the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development (OLPD), is collaborating with colleagues from Williams College and the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), India, on a four-year grant (March 2015-January 2019) funded by the Department of Labor. The grant seeks to answer the question of whether life skills training and mentoring by older female role models, denoted “social mobilizers,” can increase the probability that girls progress through and complete secondary school, lower their rates of participation in child labor, and enhance their non-cognitive skills. The project includes a randomized controlled trial and qualitative longitudinal interview data from girls, parents and community members in Rajasthan, India, that implement a girls’ education program sponsored by the non-governmental organization Room to Read. Dr. DeJaeghere, working with a graduate assistant, will be responsible for the development of the qualitative data protocols, the training of and data gathering by researchers in India, and the analysis and reporting of longitudinal data.
