Willie Jett

[ST. PAUL, MN] – Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan today announced six new members of the Walz-Flanagan Cabinet, including Willie Jett as Commissioner of Education. Jett is a lecturer in and an alumnus of the K-12 Administrative Licensure program in the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development at the University of Minnesota.

Michael C. Rodriguez, Dean of CEHD, praised Jett’s collaborative work as a superintendent to support every student. “When I heard he was interested in bringing his leadership savvy to CEHD, I was 100% on board. And although he was with us just a short time, I am excited to know his leadership expertise is being leveraged for a greater purpose in Minnesota.”

“Having worked in school districts from St. Cloud to St. Paul, Willie Jett understands the shared challenges and diverse needs of schools across our state,” said Governor Walz. “I look forward to working together to ensure every child in Minnesota receives a world-class education, no matter their race or zip code.”

“I have enjoyed my time working with future school leaders in my position at the University of Minnesota, and I am excited to get to work for all educators,” Jett said. “Great work happens in community, and together, we will continue to advance access and opportunity for every child in every corner of Minnesota.”

“We are looking forward to working with Mr. Jett on the issues that matter most to Minnesotans and educators,” said Denise Specht, president of Education Minnesota. “From the opportunity gaps faced by our BIPOC students, to reducing class sizes, to providing sufficient mental health services, to stabilizing the educator workforce through improved compensation from the first day through a dignified retirement, there are unprecedented challenges for Minnesota schools right now. We’re eager to begin the hard work of finding solutions with the new commissioner.”

Jett has taught and led in urban, suburban, and greater Minnesota school districts for over three decades. He understands the challenges and strengths of all communities, and his career is characterized by a commitment to raising student achievement and closing opportunity gaps. He is committed to preparing our future citizens, growing Minnesota’s workforce, and supporting professional educators.

Katie Pekel, Executive Director of Educational Leadership at CEHD, said “I have known Willie for nearly 20 years. His dedication to the profession is only outmatched by his dedication to individuals. Minnesota education is in good hands.”
