Donald R. Dengel, PhD, professor of kinesiology and director of the Laboratory of Integrative Human Physiology at the School of Kinesiology is a co-author of an article recently published in the Journal of Clinical Densitometry. The article entitled “DXA-determined regional adiposity relates to insulin resistance in a young adult population with overweight and obesity” examined the relationship of regional measures of body composition to indices of insulin resistance.

The authors reported that in women the strongest correlations were observed between the android-to-gynoid ratio for indices of insulin resistance. In men the strongest correlations, indices of insulin sensitivity were with android fat mass. Visceral adipose tissue was observed to be related to the insulin sensitivity index in both males and females.
