Sheila Williams Ridge, MA, director of the Shirley G. Moore Lab School, is part of a coalition that is calling for an increased focus on outdoor educational opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic and into the future.

The Teach Outdoors! Minnesota coalition, which includes organizations such as the Minnesota Association for Environmental Education, the Minnesota Children & Nature Connection, and the Minnesota Zoo, developed a position statement and website offering research-based resources that teachers, school administrators, and families can use to provide healthy and meaningful learning outside. Resources encompass topics such as teacher mentorship, outdoor curriculum, professional development, and virtual learning options, and apply to multiple age groups, from PreK-12th grade and higher education.

According to the position statement, “Now is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the fresh air, movement, inspiration, and many benefits nature has to offer.” The statement notes that teaching outdoors is achievable for any teacher, available year-round, possible in any setting, and a great way to create positive teacher and student outcomes.

“The Lab School has moved to an outdoor model this year, utilizing the space at the University as our classroom. This increased use of nature provides children with opportunities to connect with each other, with our community, and follow best practices for avoiding COVID-19 transmission opportunities,” Williams Ridge said. “Through this coalition we can continue to support and prepare pre-service and currently practicing teachers around Minnesota.”
