Sarah Greising, PhD, assistant professor in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Skeletal Muscle Plasticity and Regeneration Laboratory, along with Jarrod Call, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Georgia, received a 5-year $2.3 million dollar, multi-PI R01 grant from the  National Institutes of Health that will run from 2022 to 2027. The award entitled, Pathological Foundations of Skeletal Muscle After Volumetric Muscle Loss and Targets For Rehabilitation, allows this collaborative team to expand their work investigating the mechanisms of rehabilitation response after orthopaedic extremity trauma. The results of the proposed studies are expected to define cellular mechanisms that contribute to the finite adaptive and regenerative capacity of the remaining muscle after volumetric muscle loss. They expect these results could be transformative to clinical care for volumetric muscle loss-injured patients both acutely and chronically.
