Beth Lewis, PhD, professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology, director of the School of Kinesiology, and director of the Exercise and Mental Health Lab (EMHL), was recently on KSTP news that featured a story on strength training being a key element to longevity and quality of life for seniors. The story looked at maintaining mobility and strength while aging, specifically the benefits of strength training through the later years. Lewis is quoted, “It comes down to quality of life. We’ve done a little bit of a disservice by just saying, OK, just go out and walk, you’ll be fine, that’s enough. You should do that, it’s really important for cardiovascular disease prevention. But you also should to do strength training in order to prevent muscle loss over time.”
