Christiana Raymond-Pope, PhD, researcher in the Skeletal Muscle Plasticity and Regeneration Laboratory (SMPRL), led by Sarah Greising, PhD, associate professor in the School of Kinesiology, recently published an article “Restricted Physical Activity After Volumetric Muscle Loss Alters Whole-Body and Local Muscle Metabolism,” in The Journal of Physiology. The highly impactful nature of this work is supported by a recently published Translational Perspective article, “Prescribing Reduced Physical Activity Following Volumetric Muscle Loss Not Really A Good Idea,” by Drs. Tyrone Washington and Jeffrey Wolchok from the University of Arkansas which will now accompany Dr. Raymond-Pope’s in the February Edition of The Journal of Physiology (Volume 601, Issue 4). The Perspective highlights the impactful nature of Dr. Raymond-Pope’s work, in particular suggesting that studies are needed that mimic what is seen clinically following traumatic injury (i.e., reduced physical activity) and the importance of considering physical activity when designing future studies.
