In this week’s “Tucker Center Talks” episode [S2E20], Nicole M. LaVoi, Ph.D., senior lecturer in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Tucker Center, talks to colleague Dr. Gyasmine George-Williams “Dr. G” who is an activist, socio-cultural higher education practitioner, and Assistant Professor at the University of La Verne. George-Williams earned her bachelor’s in Psychology from California State University, Los Angeles, a Masters in College Counseling and Student Development and Masters in Educational Counseling, both from the University of La Verne, and a PhD in Higher Education from Azusa Pacific University. She serves on the Black Scholars Advisory Board, Black Faculty and Staff Association, and is a faculty partner to La Verne’s Intercollegiate Athletics Committee. Her research and passion includes athlete and student activism, student-faculty interaction among students of color, women of color in leadership, and critical race theory in higher education. George-Williams is the founder of GGW Consulting and has created evidenced-based models to honor and center the experiences and leadership of activists of color and disenfranchised groups. Dr. G. was recently part of a scholarly panel for the Fall 2020 Tucker Center Distinguished Lecture Series where she talked about the Activism Growth Model (AGM). In the podcast, LaVoi and George-Williams explore the development and theoretical underpinning of the AGM and the Black Athlete Activist Leadership (BAAL) Model.

MN Spokesman-Recorder highlights Tucker Center’s distinguished lecture panel on race, activism, and women athletes

The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder has published an article, “Tucker Center’s all-sistahs panel talks sports and rage,” on the October 19 Tucker Center Distinguished Lecture Series panel presentation, “Black Women in Sport: Voices of Resistance & Athlete Activism.” The article author, Charles Hallman, interviews several of the panel participants in the first of this 3-part column covering the Distinguished Lecture event.

The event was conceived and organized by School of Kinesiology senior lecturer and Tucker Center director Dr. Nicole M. LaVoi, moderated by Dr. Nikki Franke, with panelists Drs. Akilah Carter Francique, Nikki Franke, Joyce Olushola Ogunrinde, Gyasmine George-Williams, and Nefertiti Walker. LaVoi, PhD, is a panelist on the October 29 “Advancing Diversity & Inclusion in the Workplace” virtual panel, discussion, and training sponsored by the Ross Initiative In Sports For Equality (RISE) and Women in Sports and Events (WISE) Twin Cities. The panel includes LaVoi and Kim Miller (VP, Programs, RISE), Venessa Hutchinson (Sr. Mgr Football Development, NFL), and Sianneh Mulbah (Chief People Officer, Wolves & Lynx).

LaVoi, Ph.D., senior lecturer in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Tucker Center, talks to colleague Dr. Jennifer (Bruening) McGarry, professor of sport management and department head in Educational Leadership in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut, and Executive Director of Husky Sport. The professors talk about McGarry’s career pathway (which includes stints as a coach and athletic director), her research related to gender and sport focused primarily on barriers and supports for women and those from minoritized ethnic and socio-economic groups, and her advice to women who want to pursue a career in sport.

Dengel and Evanoff publish paper on opening a lab during COVID-19

Donald R. Dengel, PhD, professor in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Laboratory of Integrative Human Physiology (LIHP), and Nicholas Evanoff, MS, doctoral student in the School of Kinesiology and Lab Manager of the the LIHP, published a paper in the International Journal of Sports Medicine entitled “Re-Opening Exercise Science Laboratories and Testing During the Covid-19 Endemic Phase.” The paper presents suggestions for how exercise science laboratories can open and create a safe environment for subjects, laboratory personnel and equipment upon reopening.

Jill Ellis, Olympic soccer coach, cites Tucker Center report card data

Former women’s national soccer team head coach Jill Ellis recently cited data from the Tucker Center’s Women in College Coaching Report Card as an impetus for starting her coaching mentorship program. The article, “US Soccer, Jill Ellis announce coach mentorship program,” appeared on the Fox13 Memphis website.

Tucker Center director and School of Kinesiology senior lecturer Nicole M. LaVoi, PhD, is a panelist on the October 8 “What are the consequences of COVID-19 for women’s sport,” Zoom panel [422939] at the 2020 International Sociology of Sport Association (ISSA) 2020 Conference. LaVoi’s co-panelists include Tucker Center Affiliated Scholar Dr. Cheryl Cooky (Purdue), Dr. Fiona MacLachlan (Victoria University, Melbourne) and Dr. Holly Thorpe (University of Waikato, New Zealand), with moderator Dr. Madeleine Pape (University of Lausanne). The aim of the virtual panel is to discuss the potential impacts of the coronavirus crisis on women’s sport when there are good reasons to believe that the pandemic will disproportionately and significantly impact women’s sport and that those impacts could be long-lasting. ISSA comprises an active body of scholars who study sport from the perspectives of sociology, social psychology, anthropology, history and political economy.

WeCOACH, the premier membership organization committed to recruiting, advancing, and retaining women coaches across all sports and levels, has announced a formal partnership with the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport providing collaborative branding, data collection, and promotion across several research initiatives, including the well-known Women in College Coaching Report Card that is co-produced annually. Previously known as the Alliance of Women Coaches, WeCOACH provides a supportive and unified network, educational programs and resources, and access to in-person and digital resources.

Tucker Center Women in College Coaching Report Card awards U of M a B+

The Tucker Center’s newly released “Women in College Coaching Report Card” gave the University of Minnesota a “B+” grade with 64% of women’s teams coached by women, according to KSTP News. The report, released today, gives a grade to each of over 350 Division I schools nationwide. Co-author and Tucker Center director, Dr. Nicole M. LaVoi and Pam Borton, former U of M Women’s Basketball Head coach comment.

Annual TC Women in College Coaching Report Card released: Critical zone of attrition identified

The Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport released its annual Women in College Coaching Report Card (WCCRC) in collaboration with WeCOACH. The report, “Head coaches of women’s collegiate teams: A comprehensive report on NCAA Division-I institutions, 2019-20,” is an analysis of females vs. males holding head coach positions of women’s teams in NCAA Division I. The report is authored by Tucker Center director, Nicole M. LaVoi, Ph.D., doctoral student and Pam Borton Fellow Courtney Boucher, and TC Summer Intern Greta Sirek. This report card has identified a decrease in women in assistant coach positions as a critical zone of attrition. To read the report, please go to the Tucker Center website.

Tucker Center research on media representation of women athletes appears in a Forbes article, “Just Women’s Sports Podcast, Hosted By USWNT Star Kelley O’Hara, Is A ‘Bet On Women’.” The article highlights a new podcast, “Just Women’s Sports Podcast,” hosted by the United States Women’s National Team’s (USWNT) two-time World Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist Kelley O’Hara. The podcast launched at No. 1 in sports and No. 16 overall on Apple Podcasts.
