Antunovic presents at 9th International Scientific Conference on Kinesiology in Croatia

Dunja Antunovic, PhD, assistant professor of sport sociology in the School of Kinesiology and affiliated scholar with the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport, is lead author on a paper titled “Sport, Gender, and Audience Engagement: An Analysis of Broadcasters’ Social Media Pages” presented at the 9th International Scientific Conference on Kinesiology in Croatia. The paper was featured as part of a conference symposium, “Social Aspect of Sports in Southeastern Europe: Never-Ending Transitions.” Dr. Antunovic worked on the project in collaboration with Sunčica Bartoluci, PhD, from the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Zagreb.

The study examined how broadcasters in several countries in the Central and Eastern European region covered the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games on their social media platforms. The study found that broadcasters emphasized sports associated with national success, but also consistently posted about non-Olympic men’s soccer competition. Further, the study discussed the implications of the gender imbalance in Olympic coverage.

LaVoi to present at 8th Annual IWG World Conference in Auckland

Nicole M. LaVoi, PhD, Tucker Center director and senior lecturer in the School of Kinesiology, will present at the 8th International Working Group (IWG) World Conference on Women & Sport in Auckland, New Zealand, May 5-8, 2022. The IWG World Conference on Women & Sport is the largest gathering in the world to advance gender equity and equality in sport and physical activity. The conference also includes top women industry leaders in sport from WeCOACH, the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport, Athlete Assessments and Juntendo University.

School of Kinesiology assistant professor Sarah Greising, PhD, director of the Skeletal Muscle Plasticity and Regeneration Laboratory (SMPRL), is an invited presenter for a September 1, 2021, Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Biomedical Engineering seminar entitled “Targeting Innervation during Skeletal Muscle Regeneration.” Greising’s presentation discusses the work of the SMPRL, specifically novel treatments to promote innervation following traumatic skeletal muscle injuries.

Dr. Li Li Ji, professor of kinesiology and director of the Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene and Exercise Science (LPHES), his former graduate student Dr. Tianou Zhang, now an assistant professor of kinesiology at the University of Texas San Antonio, and colleagues have had their research cited in an Eat This, Not That! article, “The One Breakfast Food That Reduces Inflammation, Says Science.” The research is from a 2014 article, “Avenanthramide supplementation attenuates exercise-induced inflammation in postmenopausal women,” which looks at a polyphenol in oats called avenanthramide (AVA) that has been proven to slow down the inflammatory response and increase antioxidant defenses.

Tucker Center research cited in head coach appointment to mentorship program

The Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport’s2020-2021 Women in College Coaching Report Card” provided data cited in a University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics post, “Coach Hicks to Serve as Mentor in Female Coaching Mentorship Program.” Shareese Hicks, the track & field and cross country head coach at UTRGV, was appointed as a mentor in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Female Coaching Mentorship Program (FCMP). The FCMP is designed to increase the representation, depth of knowledge, and advancement of female coaches in cross country and track & field at every level while creating industry accessibility. One indicator of women’s track & field representation is given in the Tucker Center’s report data indicating that last season just 18.4% of NCAA Division I and 17.7% of NCAA Division I women’s cross country head coaches were women. The report was authored by Nicole M. LaVoi, Ph.D., director of the Tucker Center and senior lecturer in the School of Kinesiology, 2021 Pam Borton Fellow Courtney Boucher, and graduate research assistant Hannah Silva-Breen.

Stoffregen PLOS ONE article research on Jeopardy! game show?

Postural sway research by Thomas Stoffregen, Ph.D., professor and director of the Affordance Perception-Action Laboratory (APAL) in the School of Kinesiology, is under consideration for use on the television game show Jeopardy! Stoffregen and his colleagues (Fuch-Chen Chen, Manuel Varlet, Christina Alcantara, Benoit Bardy) published the seminal article “Getting your sea legs,” in PLOS ONE in June of 2013. With over 7,400 views (10.4% downloaded), the article has enjoyed an uptick in citations in the last two years, now totalling 60 overall citations. The article’s citation rate is a full 11 times higher than the average.

Research from the Tucker Center’s groundbreaking video “Media Coverage and Female Athletes” is quoted in a recent news article from BusinessWire, “The Future of Women’s Sports Is in Our Hands: Secret Deodorant Launches “Just #WatchMe” Campaign to Empower and Support Girls and Women Athletes Nationwide.” The Secret campaign is part of a $1 million pledge in support of equality programs for women and girls, in partnership with the Women’s Sports Foundation. The donations for the Just #WatchMe campaign are designed to help ensure the next generation of women athletes are “funded and fearless.”

LaVoi Ph.D., Tucker Center director and senior lecturer in the School of Kinesiology, is interviewed in a New York Times article, “When Gender Equality at the Olympics Is Not So Equal.” LaVoi comments on disparities in providing resources for female athletes and how, despite this, in many white, westernized countries female athletes outperform their male counterparts.

Tucker Center director LaVoi, director emerita Kane form Land O’ Lakes, Inc. Title IX Championship Tour selection committee

Tucker Center director Nicole M. LaVoi, PhD, and director emerita Mary Jo Kane, PhD, have been tapped to form a selection committee on behalf of Minnesota Sports and Events (MNSE) to choose 11 featured athletes and leaders, as well as 50 Title IX Honor Roll individuals, for the newly announced Land O’ Lakes, Inc., Title IX Championship Tour.

The bus tour, designed to honor and celebrate the contributions of Minnesota female athletes and leaders who have advanced girls’ and women’s sports, is one of several events leading up to the 50th anniversary of Title IX in advance of the 2022 NCAA Women’s Final Four on April 1 and 3, 2022 at Minneapolis’ Target Center.

Lisa A Kihl, PhD, associate professor of sport management in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Global Institute for Responsible Sport Organizations (GIRSO), has joined the Sports & Entertainment Impact Collective (SEIC) as an Academic Advocate. The SEIC is a sports and entertainment philanthropy organization that combines academic training, professional development, and custom events. The SEIC offers the gold standard in educational opportunities that result in success and growth for leaders from across the sports and entertainment industries. As an Academic Advocate, Kihl will join other professors, researchers, and facilitators who focus on sports and philanthropy and provide expertise and support to ensure that the SEIC maintains a rigorous academic standard.

President Gabel appoints Dengel next Faculty Athletics Representative

Donald R. Dengel, PhD, professor of exercise science in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Laboratory of Integrative Human Physiology (LIHP), has been appointed by President Joan Gabel as the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) for the University of Minnesota. As the FAR, Dr. Dengel serves as the University’s delegate to the NCAA, Big 10, WCHA and other external organizations. The FAR reviews all legislation and polices of these organizations and works with Intercollegiate Athletics and the faculty to assure the academic integrity and welfare of the U of M’s student-athletes.

Baeth is a former research assistant in the Tucker Center, and forever a member of the Tucker Team. She is a field hockey and lacrosse coach, at all levels; notably was head field hockey coach at Oberlin College; is a graduate of the Masters in Coaching program at Smith College; and earned her BA at Swarthmore. On this week’s episode Baeth talks with LaVoi about code switching related to gender and competition, her dissertation research on supports for women coaches, the Athletic Equality Index she helped develop at Athlete Ally, and advice for young women scholars.
