LaVoi, Ph.D., senior lecturer in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Tucker Center, talks talks to colleague Dr. Akilah Carter Francique, Executive Director for The Institute for the Study of Sport, Society and Social Change (ISSSSC) at San Jose State, which continues the legacy and dialogue about athlete activism and the influence of sport in effecting positive social change. Dr. Akilah was part of a scholarly panel for the Fall 2020 Tucker Center Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) where she talked about various types of rage experienced by Black women. She talks more in-depth about how she came to frame her remarks around rage, using anger as information as well as healing, and answers some audience questions not attended to during the live lecture. Carter Francique ends with her advice to young female scholars about the initiatives and productive work of the ISSSSC.

Ogunrinde goes more in-depth about some points she made during the lecture, and answers some audience questions not attended to on that evening. The article is part of the Aspen Institute’s Future of Sports Conversation Series and resulted from asking the many guest authors: What innovations and/or disruptions to sports during Covid-19 do you think will become permanent after the pandemic?

LaVoi, PhD, Tucker Center director and School of Kinesiology senior lecturer, and Dunja Antunovic, Ph.D., assistant professor in the School of Kinesiology, have published an article in the Canadian online academic and research journal, The Conversation. The article, “What pro sports should learn from resilient women athletes post-pandemic,” is written with colleagues Dr. Ann Pegoraro (University of Guelph), Dr. Nancy Lough (University of Nevada, Las Vegas), and Dr. Katie Lebel (Ryerson University) and explores changes in the women’s sport economy and marketing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tucker Center research cited in USA Today’s “Golfweek”

Research from the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport in the School of Kinesiology is cited by USA Today’s “Golfweek.” The opinion article, “It’s time for the golf world to blow the roof off the U.S. Women’s Open,” notes research indicating only 4% of sports coverage includes female athletes, while 40% of participants are female. The piece argues that with the US Women’s Open beginning next week now is the time to promote women’s sport.

Tucker Center director and School of Kinesiology senior lecturer Nicole M. LaVoi, PhD, presented December 2 at the NCAA Women Coaches Academy (WCA), hosted in partnership between WeCOACH and the NCAA. LaVoi’s presentation, “Strategies for Navigating the Coaching Profession,” was part of a 4-day educational training attended virtually by 78 NCAA coaches of all experience levels. The WCA is designed for NCAA Divisions I, II, or III member institution women coaches to increase their individual effectiveness by learning advanced skills and strategies that directly affect their personal and team success.

On November 13-14, the Institute for the Study of Sport, Society and Social Change (ISSSSC) at San José State University sponsored the inaugural “Sport, Society and Social Change Conference” in which Tucker Center director and School of Kinesiology senior lecturer Nicole M. LaVoi, PhD, was a keynote panelist in a conversation discussing the state of sport in society. Professionals leaders of sport and sport organizations shared their perspective on aspects that influenced their management decisions during the onset of COVID-19 to and through the Black Lives Matter movement.

LaVoi, PhD, was a panelist on a November 11 panel on “Disruptions in Sport: Keeping with the COVID Themes Unique to 2020.” The panel is part of the ongoing Sport Marketing Association’s “Scholar Highlights” series, or SMASH. LaVoi’s panel of scholars discussed current disruptions in sport marketing, with a focus on speculation regarding lasting impacts of COVID-19.
